I get asked all the time what supplements I take to keep my body strong and that don't affect blood sugars, so I'm finally sharing the deets...

When I started to get really serious about my fitness journey and managing diabetes I started to pay more attention to the things that I was putting in my body. The crazy thing is that for years I always saw supplements as something that was needed to support my goals, yet when I researched deep many of the products I had been using were not created equal. And what I mean is that many of the ingredients that were in my protein powders and multi-vitamins contained fillers and artificial sweeteners that I didn't even know about! whats more, is that I didn't realize that I didn't even NEED to be drinking protein powder after my workouts. Also, I used to get the flu 1x per year and I thought that because I was living with type 1 diabetes it meant that my immune system was weak. I was wrong.

 

This all changed when one day in 2017 a box of goodies landed on my doorstep! And after weeks of product training I stopped buying anything and everything and started investing in my health with just a few quality products (I haven't had the flu since! *knock on wood*)

My Secret When it Comes to Supplements

Supplements are just that, "supplements". They are meant to supplement your diet and what you're already doing. The most important supplement is a good multi vitamin to keep your immune system strong because without a strong immune function you really can't function in any aspect of life, you know? 

The body needs a minimum amount of protein per day and therefore protein powder can be a great way to get in your daily protein intake, but again, it's not going to be THE thing that gets you results alone. It's a great supplement to what you're already doing nutrition and exercise-wise.

A multi vitamin is #1 when it comes to supplements but getting adequate sleep should be top priority. When you get proper sleep, rest and recovery your body can fight off viruses sooo much better! My Personal Experience

Growing up my family was always very health conscious and as kids we ALWAYS took high quality multi vitamins. When I first tried 1st Phorm protein powder I loved the taste because it didn't have that weird after taste that most protein powders had! But before purchasing and recommending their products I had to cross check their ingredients to the supplements my parents took to be sure that they were just as good quality...and thankfully they were! As a person living with type 1 diabetes the carb count in my protein powders is a huge factor, not only that but since I prefer to get most of my calories from whole food sources having a protein powder that has fewer calories is ideal for me. It's said that consuming 75-100 grams of protein in one sitting can increase blood glucose levels similarly to consuming 20 grams of carbs so I keep this in mind any time I supplement with protein powder though I have not needed to bolus extra for 1st Phorm protein powder (I'm obsessed with both the whey and plant based options!)
